Hummingbirds Love Tennis Too!

June 23rd, 2009 by DennisTheTennisMenace

One of the most fascinating birds alive is the hummingbird.

Did you know that their wings flap at like 80 miles an hour?

They are beautiful too, and so serene. We could all take lessons
from the hummingbird on how to maintain inner peace.

Along with tennis season also comes the hummingbird.
Have you ever looked around a tennis court, I mean really looked,
and noticed these gorgeous creatures? As a nature and tennis lover,
I think it ought to be mandatory that we provide easy access for the
hummingbird to
hummingbird feeders

near every tennis court. Now
that may sound kind of silly to you, but think about it. Aren’t we
careful to provide refreshments to humans? Why not the hummingbird?

Yeah, I’m getting very Zen.

Ok, let’s talk about something more practical.
A hummingbird feeder makes the neatest gift, a unique way
of saying you care, about the person receiving the gift and
about our beautiful hummingbirds. Give you tennis buddies
hummingbird feeders for their courts and see the sparkle
in their eyes when they open THIS gift! What a great way
to impress your tennis friends, make something positive
happen besides Love at their tennis courts, and feeding the beautiful hummingbird. A win win for all concerned.

It is that time of year, guys and dolls! Tennis, the most popular summer sport, is alive and thriving in the US of A and also in countries such as Japan and Australia.

If you have never considered taking up tennis, maybe you should rethink that decision when you learn how great this activity is for your health. According to experts, playing tennis, as opposed to walking or jogging, is 85% more beneficial to overall health, due to the fact that not only are you increasing your heart rate and burning calories, you are also using muscles that increase your longevity.

So what are you waiting for? Tennis anyone?

Avoid “Tennis Skin.”

June 12th, 2009 by DennisTheTennisMenace

If there is one thing all tennis players, whether they be professionals or just folks who play for fun, have in common, that is the damage done to their skin by the sun. What if I told you that you could play tennis and keep your beautiful skin using an amazing product, nu skin.

The sun is a big part of the whole game of tennis, the ambience and the atmosphere of this outdoor sport is necessary, let’s say. However, as most of you know the UV rays from the sun do an awful number on your skin. And not only does getting over tanned or sunburned make you far more likely to get skin cancer, it ages you much quicker, and that can never be good! Especially for us gals.

Do yourself a big favor and check out the link I listed in the first paragraph of this post. I highly recommend nu-skin, with a name that fits perfectly, for it provides you with exactly that, new skin!

Now you can play tennis or other outdoor sports without worrying about the damage to your skin from the sun. Play with impunity!

Understanding the Serves of Serena Williams and Martina Navratilova

May 15th, 2009 by DennisTheTennisMenace

Two awesome tennis champs have alot in common when it comes to their powerful serves…

1. EXTENSION
Williams hits a flat, hard serve with a bit of topspin. Navratilova hits a kick serve style. Yet these serves have alot in common.

Extension is the most important about their serves. I don’t just mean the full extension of the hitting arm, but also the hitting shoulder and the legs.

Sometimes recreational players think extension should change from serve to serve. It shouldn’t.

The way a player hits the ball does change, but if you start from the tip of either racquet and trace a line straight down to the lead toe, you’ll see that both players have extended upward as far as possible. Without extension like this, it’s impossible to generate power and spin.

2. TOSS
Both these women place their tosses perfectly.

It’s always best to do so while going through the ?rst part of your motion, as if you were going to serve.

Anyone can toss well when standing still, but you need to toss well while serving. Sometimes the movement of your hips can cause you to hook the ball.

The best servers, like Williams and Navratilova, are smooth and can adjust their tosses for different serves.

3. GRIP
You can see from photos that a Continental grip is a must! To ?nd this grip, hold your racquet with the head perpendicular to the ground and grab the handle as if you were shaking someone’s hand.

4. HEAD
Keep your head up! Williams’ eyes are right on the target. Navratilova is looking forward as she plans to rush the net. Her chin hasn’t dropped down or jerked forward.

If you keep your head up and still, you’ll watch the ball long enough.

Williams has her cheeks puffed out as she prepares to release a lot of air when she hits the ball, that’s why she grunts.

Don’t forget to exhale when you serve. It will keep you loose.

5. TORSO
Because Williams is hitting a ?atter serve, her torso opens up and faces the net sooner than Navratilova’s.

On a kick serve, you need to stay sideways slightly longer so you can brush up on the ball rather than hit through it. Notice that Williams doesn’t rotate too far.

6. OFF HAND
Williams and Navratilova tuck their off hands into their bodies around their waists.

Why?

You don’t want to put your nonhitting arm down as you swing. If you do, your head may follow and you might make contact while slumping forward rather than with your body at full extension.

7. LEGS
Power on your serve begins with your legs.

Williams and Navratilova have healthy knee bends on their serves. Each woman leans her lead hip toward the baseline while rotating her upper body back.

If you don’t coil like this, your serve will lack power.

8. FEET
Both women’s feet leave the ground. I like the shoulder-width distances between their feet—that’s excellent balance.

As their front legs move forward and land on the ground, their rear legs will kick back to maintain this balance.

Analyzing these experts can help you get a better game. If you want some simple tips, check out the “Tennis For Beginners” link below…

The Kick Serve as a Solid Second Serve

May 14th, 2009 by DennisTheTennisMenace

K, I’m trying, really trying to get better at tennis. My wife (the expert tennis player) tells me a well rounded game includes a powerful second server. The kick serve is one of the smartest second serves to hit. First serves aren’t always going to stay in bounds, so you’ll need a solid second serve to really play at a higher level. But there’s more to it than just getting it play… if you’re facing an aggressive returner they will hammer you back with a weak second serve.

The kick serve is one of the smartest second serves you return with.

1) It is a safe shot

The Kick Serve is usually going to go high over the net and spin back down into the service box. This reduces your chances of a double fault.

2) The ball will kick up high on your opponent,

Struck correctly the kick server will kick up at your opponent, making your return more difficult to connect with. But it takes plenty of practice to develop a good kick serve.

If you’d like to learn more about playing tennis at a higher level, Tennis For Beginners is an awesome resource… check it out! tell ‘em Jonny sent you :)
